HR 1006

The "Jerusalem Embassy and Recognition Act of 2011", or H.R. 1006, seeks to see Jerusalem recognized as Israel's capital, and to relocate the US Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem.

While the "Jerusalem Embassy Act of 1995" provided the basis for the US embassy to be moved to Jerusalem, it also contained a clause that afforded the President a security waiver that could be used every six months to delay the move. Every President since Bill Clinton has exercised this waiver. H.R. 1006 removes this privilege and demands that the embassy be established in Jerusalem by January 1, 2013.

H.R 1006 is currently in committee, where it needs enough votes to be put to the House floor for a vote. It has solid support from both Republicans and Democrats.
